U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday that former President Pranab Mukherjee’s “visionary leadership” has helped India emerge as a global power and pave the way for a stronger US-India partnership. With this, he expressed deep grief over Mukherjee’s demise.
He said that the demise of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee has deeply saddened the United States. In his best journey of more than half a century, Mukherjee has worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of India as an MP, Cabinet Minister and President of the world’s largest democracy.

“His visionary leadership helped India’s rise as a global power and paved the way for a strong US-India partnership,” Pompeo said in a statement. He said, “Many of President Mukherjee’s achievements have made India more prosperous and secure. As Minister of External Affairs and Minister of Defense, he played a key role in laying the foundation for the historic Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement and the US-India Strategic Partnership.
He said that few Indian politicians have played a more important role in preparing India for global leadership in the 21st century. “On behalf of the American people, we extend our deepest condolences to the people of India and to Mukherjee’s family in this hour of mourning,” he said.
