The ranks of the Indian Air Force are divided into these categories-

1. Commissioned Officer







2. Junior Commissioned Officer

3. Non-commissioned officer

1. Commissioned Officer

This is a 5 star rank with NATO rating code OF-10. This is the best rank of the Indian Air Force. To date, this rank has been given solely to Arjan Singh. It is just like the rank of Field Marshal of the Indian Army and Admiral of Fleet of the Indian Navy.

This is a 4 star rank with NATO rating code OF-9. Only Air Chief Marshal can develop into Chief of the Air Staff within the Indian Air Force. This is just like the rank of General of Indian Army and Admiral of Indian Navy.

It is a 3 star rank with NATO rating code OF-8. This is just like the rank of Lieutenant General of the Indian Army and Vice Admiral of the Indian Navy. Officers of this rank play the function of Commander of the Chief of Indian Air Force Formation.

This is a 2 star rank with NATO rating code OF-7. This is just like the rank of Major General of the Indian Army and Rear Admiral of the Indian Navy.

This is the 1 star rank with the NATO rating code OF-6. This is essentially the most junior rank within the Air Officer ranks. This is just like the rank of Brigadier of Indian Army and Commodore of Navy.

This is a senior commissioned rank with NATO rating code OF-5. This rank is just like the rank of Colonel of Indian Army and Captain of Navy.

This is a senior commissioned rank with NATO rating code OF-4. This is equal to Lieutenant Colonel of Indian Army and Commander of Navy.

This is essentially the most junior rank within the senior officer ranks. Its NATO rating code is OF-3. This rank is just like Major of Indian Army and Lieutenant Commander of Navy.

This is the junior commissioned rank with the NATO rating code OF-2. This is just like the rank of Captain of Indian Army and Lieutenant of Navy.

This is the junior commissioned rank with the NATO rating code OF-1. This is just like the rank of Lieutenant of Indian Army and Sub Lieutenant of Navy

2. Junior Commissioned Officer

This is essentially the most senior rank of junior commissioned officers with the NATO rating code OR-9. A minimal of 28 years of service is required to develop into a Master Warrant Officer. He is just like Subedar Major of Indian Army and Master Chief Petty Officer (First Class) of Navy.

This is Junior Commissioned Officer rank with NATO code OR-8. He is just like Subedar of Indian Army and Master Chief Petty Officer (Second Class) of Navy.

It consists of Boastwain’s Mates, Surgeon’s Mates, Sailmakers, Armorers, Schoolmasters and Clerks. To develop into a Junior Warrant Officer, a Sergeant has to bear at the very least 17 years of service and examination. He is just like Naib Subedar of Indian Army and Chief Petty Officer of Navy.

3. Non-commissioned officer

This is Non Commissioned Officer Ranking. To develop into a Sergeant, you need to serve at the very least 13 years and 6 months. This is just like the rank of Havaldar of the Indian Army and Petty Officer of the Navy.

Corporal rank NATO code rating is OR-4. This rank is the same as the rank of Naik of Indian Army and Able Seaman of Navy. A Leading Aircraftman has to serve at the very least 5 years to develop into a Corporal.

This isn’t a rank however a title given to non-commissioned officers within the Air Force. This title is obtained after working and coaching on Aircraftman rank for at the very least 2 years.

It is the youngest rank of the Indian Air Force with the NATO rating code OR-1. This is the coaching rank. Aircraftman doesn’t put on any rank or Insignia. This is equal to Sepoy of Indian Army and Seaman of Navy.
