A case has been registered against a 25-year-old married man in Barwani on a complaint of a 22-year-old girl under the ‘Religious Freedom Ordinance-2020’. Accused Sohail Mansuri aka Sunny is a truck driver and is also a part time DJ player. A case has been registered at the Badwani Kotwali police station in Barwani district on Sunday under sections 376 (rape) 294, 323 (assault), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Ordinance 2020. He has been shifted to Palsud Police Station for further investigation into the case.
Madhya Pradesh government approved the ‘Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Ordinance-2020’ against the alleged ‘Love Jihad’ on 29 December. Through this ordinance, a provision of a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to one lakh rupees has been made in the case of marriage and any other fraudulent conversion.
This ordinance is similar in some ways to the “Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Prohibition Ordinance-2020” notified by the BJP-led government of Uttar Pradesh, as it also has a provision of a maximum sentence of 10 years for forcible conversion.
