Jean Currivan Trebek was born on Sunday, September 8, 1963 (age 57 years, as of 2020), and she hails from Greenlawn, New York. She grew up on the East Coast, Long Island in a Catholic family along with her siblings. Jean’s brother, Chris Currivan, was born with Hydrocephalus, a medical condition in which extra fluid puts pressure on the brain, hence, he had some developmental delays. During her childhood days, Jean was a responsible child who looked after her brother. In an interview, she said,

We went to school together, and I promised my parents that I would watch out for him. Sometimes I would even leave my classroom to go check on him. I took care of my brother, and it felt like a gift rather than a burden. Other kids might have resented that responsibility. I thought it was a blessing. “

She did her schooling at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, and later, she attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. After completing her formal education, she pursued a part-time job as a bookkeeper, where she worked for Alex Trebek’s friend. In an interview, she said,

Alex was my boss’s buddy. He’d come over every Saturday to play backgammon and have lunch. I knew that he was on some TV show, but he never said much about it and I didn’t ask.”

Together, they have two children; a son, Matthew Trebek, and a daughter, Emily Trebek, who works as an interior designer. Alex Trebek (born in 1940) is twenty-three years older than Jean Currivan Trebek (born in 1963). In an interview, Alex said,

I guess if I’d met her when I was in my 20s she wouldn’t have been born yet. But hey, 29 years is pretty good…

From 1974-1981, Alex was married to Elaine Callei.  Although the couple had no children together, Alex adopted Elaine’s daughter, Nicky, after their marriage.

On Sunday, November 8, 2020, at the age of 80, Alex Trebek passed away due to pancreatic cancer with a tumor that had spread to the soft lining of his stomach.
