Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chavithi, is celebrated all across the country to mark the birth ceremony of Lord Ganesha. Worshipped as the God of wisdom and new beginnings, he is the son of Lord Shiva and a Goddess Parvati.
As per the Hindu calendar, the festival is held in the month of Bhadra i.e. in the month of August and September and this year, the grand celebration of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi will start on August 22.
Besides being celebrated to mark Lord Ganesha’s birth, the festival is also associated with an instance in the Hindu mythology. Following the making of Baby Ganesha by Goddess Parvati with the help of sandalwood paste, the goddess asked him to guard the entrance of the place where she had headed to bathe.
However, when lord Shiva insisted the premises, Lord Ganesha tried to stop him, which in turn enraged the God and he severed Lord Ganesha’s head. Seeing the heartbroken reaction of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva instructed his followers to search for the head of the first living creature that they notice so that they could replace it on Ganesha’s body.
Therefore, they brought back the head of a baby elephant and that’s how lord Ganesha came back to life.
On the day of the festival, people mark the occasion by installing idols of Ganesha at their homes, temples or in elaborate pandals. Lord Ganesha is worshipped during the festival and people offer prayers along with prasad, which is later distributed amongst people. However, on the 1.5th day, 5th day and the final day, people immerse the idol in a water body after a public procession.
But considering the continuing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, wide numbers of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were cancelled all across the country.
