Yesterday, during Investor Day, Disney announced many new features. Indeed, the studio is betting on a big future. Not only will we be entitled to a new Star Wars movie, but also many series inspired by the universe created by George Lucas, Marvel series and a novelty for the Disney + streaming platform.
Universe Star Wars is developing
After the dazzling success of the series The Mandalorian, Disney seems to be betting big on the franchise. Indeed, the studio has unveiled its next film: Rogue Squadron. Expected for Christmas 2023, it will be directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman 1984). Everything will take place in “The future of the galaxy”, with new characters, “A new generation of space pilots, who will earn their badges and risk their lives”, said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is also formalized.
In addition, the Star Wars universe will be swelled with no less than ten new series. Without much surprise, The Mandalorian will be entitled to a new season, but also to derivative series! Effectively, Lando Calrissian will have his own series directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People) and soberly titled Lando. The second series is called Rangers of the New Republic. It will take place in the same timeline as The Mandalorian, and should focus on the troops of the New Republic. Other good news: the character ofAhsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, will be featured in a mini-series.
Disney also announces another series: The Acolyte, “A mysterious thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of dark secrets and emerging powers of the dark side in the final days of the High Republic era”. In addition to all this, the studio will develop two animation series, Star Wars: The Bad Watch, Star Wars: Visions and A Droid Story. And, of course, the prequel series of Rogue One, Star Wars: Andor for 2022. The series Obi-wan kenobi will host Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker).
Marvel series galore!
The Marvel catalog will grow even further! Indeed, the series WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are expected for the year 2021, in January for the first and in March for the second. She-Hulk, Loki, Moon knight, series already announced, will also arrive in the near future. However, Disney does not stop there and still announces other series from the Marvel universe. Among them, we will find I am Groot, Secret Invasion on the character of Nick Fury with Samuel L. Jackson, Iron heart, a series on Riri Williams, but also Hawkeye and Armor wars, “A classic Marvel story about Tony Stark’s worst fear coming true: What happens when his technology falls into the wrong hands?” “. In total, no less than 10 Marvel series will arrive in the years to come.
In addition, we will also be entitled to new Marvel films. Effectively, Captain marvel 2 is announced for November 2022, and will be directed by Nia DaCosta. In the casting, we will find Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Monica Rambeau. But also Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Shang-Chi, Thor: Love and Thunder (May 2022) and Black panther. The big news is undoubtedly the announcement of a new film by the 4 Fantastic directed by Jon Watts. No longer a surprise: a special Christmas film with the Guardians of the Galaxy, for 2022.
Other projects
The two big Disney franchises are well represented among all these novelties. Note however that Disney does not forget the others, since the studio will also develop its Pixar and Disney animation part with Lightyear, a film about Buzz Lightyear, Turning Red, Encanto, Iwájú (series created in collaboration with Kugali, a pan-African Disney animation company), and more. In addition, Tom Hanks should play Gepetto in the future live-action film Pinocchio, and Jude Law will be Captain Hook in Peter Pan.
An Alien series is also in development at Disney, it will be broadcast on FX. This series will take place after the film Covenant, on Earth (a place still unexplored in Alien), and will be carried out by Noah hawley.
New for Disney +
Another announcement: the Disney + subscription will increase by 2 euros, i.e. 8 euros 99 instead of the current 6 euros 99. However, Disney is announcing the increase for good reason, as the Disney + catalog is set to grow. First, with all the new series announced previously, but also with its new section with series from the American channels FX, ABC and 20th Century.
In short, the years to come promise to be more than productive at Disney.
