Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic Updates in US

NBC News

Again covid-19 is in the news, big time and it’s not pretty. It highlights that science is based on facts and you can’t go around it, you can’t talk your way out of it, there is no alternate truth, you can’t get by with a bunch of lies. It needs to be faced with a systematic set of measures backed by facts.

Positive coronavirus cases in the U.S. are breaking all records in many states and people are getting alarmed, rightly so. At least 16 states have halted their reopening plans in response to a surge in new infections. “What we hope is we can take it seriously and slow the transmission in these places,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, “But what I think is very discouraging is we’re clearly not at a point where there’s so little virus being spread that it’s going to be easy to snuff out.”
The US has reported more than 2.6 million cases of the virus and at least 128,000 deaths.
New cases in at least 36 states are trending upwards compared to the previous week.
States reporting an increase in new cases include: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington state, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
Twelve states are trekking steady in new cases: Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Virginia. Two are reporting a decline in new cases: New Jersey and Rhode Island.
The rise in cases is in part driven by gatherings, both in homes and in places like bars, which some experts called the perfect breeding ground for the virus. Experts have for long warned that some states also reopened far too soon and too quickly, cautioning the move could lead to more spikes in cases.
Younger people appear to account for the large surge in new cases. As the data had shown that fewer of them get infected and die, mostly it’s the elderly people who die. The scientists are saying that the young people may not get very sick and die but its them mostly who bring the disease home and infect the elderly who die. Picture of President Trump not wearing the mask and following social distancing didn’t set a good role model. Many Republican party followers and younger people became more daring and reluctant to take preventive measures.
It was interesting that California was the first state to shut down and one of the most aggressive in fighting the virus. But now with record breaking rise in daily new cases, it is now being forced to ask itself what went wrong. How this disease spreads is all about the margins,” Dr. Pan, a democratic California State senator and a practicing physician said. “All it takes is, like, 5 percent more people doing more high-risk behavior to change its direction.”. He blames partisanship and misinformation spread by President Trump. On the weekend after June 20, when bars reopened in Los Angeles County, an estimated 500,000 people visited nightspots. Additionally, half of the restaurants visited by county inspectors are not complying with new public health rules, according to health officials. “I’m frustrated because it’s not that we don’t know what to do,” Dr. Pan said. “We know what to do. We’re just not doing it.”
After an intense soul searching review, the consensus is that giving the localities a free hand in the reopening, the local authorities not being able to resist the pressure from the business communities and the Republican politicians to reopen earlier and at a faster pace, and the general public, fatigued from a long stay at home order and social distancing rules, rejoicing and partying in the bars and beaches with a gusto and abandon account for this increase in cases.
Same stories everywhere, early opening at a faster pace. Only difference is that most of the Southern and Western states didn’t even go through the initial lockdown period that California went through. They took halfhearted steps, never mandating lockdowns, wearing masks and making only very tepid recommendations.
In addition, giving way to pressure from President Trump and his followers, they proceeded to reopening earlier and at a faster pace in the name of economic recovery which sounded great at the time, but in hind sight proved to be fatal errors in judgement.
On Monday, the governors of New York and New Jersey said they were reconsidering plans to allow indoor dining in the coming days because they were so alarmed by the rise in coronavirus cases in the South and the West. Similar reviews of the reopenings are performed by all the states which are doing all right up to now.
Despite all these reports, President Donald Trump and his administration haven’t stopped trying to explain it away by saying that there are more reported positive cases because the U.S. has expanded its testing capacity. The pandemic is under control and the reopening is going on smoothly. This is what Vice President Pence said in the latest press meeting of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
He said it without a blink of his eye and without a sense of guilt and remorse that this line has been responsible of loss of so many precious lives and economic devastation. President Trump and his administration are still trying to paint a rosy picture by denying the facts and insisting that increased testing is what’s increasing the number of coronavirus infections.
But people are not buying it as reflected in latest poll by Pew Research Center which found three in 10 Americans say they trust President Donald Trump and his administration to get the facts straight all or most of the time when talking about Covid-19. “I can’t think of any precedent for that,” said Dan Fagin, director of New York University’s Science, Health and Environmental Reporting program, and a former reporter. “There’s a reason why that number is so low. Honestly, what disturbs even more is that there is 30% of the public who think they can believe the president on this.”
However, the governors have learnt the lesson and aren’t going to be duped again by President Trump nor by Vice President Pence. They have already paid the price by reopening early when their states had not even satisfied the guidelines recommended by the President’s own task force on the coronavirus. Now they are devastated by increasing cases, hospitalizations, daily deaths and scared public. At some time, they have to answer to the public.
Now let us go to the numbers for the day;

The scientists have already shown that the only way to control the virus is by wearing masks, keeping a social distance of 6 ft, staying home as much as you can and not joining large group and then Testing, Tracing and Isolating newly turned positive people. The world has shown its validity and we need to follow it strictly and we will be able to get it through.
In our own backyard, New York and New Jersey, the worst hit states have shown this by lowering their numbers so low that they are seriously considering any traveler from the newly hit states to require quarantining for 14 days if they travel to their area. Interestingly, Europe is reopening and is seriously considering a ban on travelers from the US.
Dr. Anthony Fauci and other top health officials will testify before Congress today on the state of the coronavirus pandemic, two days after Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar warned that the “window is closing” for the United States to get the situation under control. I’m glad that finally there is one administration senior official who has dared to tell as it is and I hope he will be joined by others and hope that they will be able to persuade President Trump to alter his failed course of deception and lies. It’s time that senators dare to tell the President that enough is enough, stop this nonsense, be serious and follow the scientists.
In his last appearance before the Senate health committee Dr. Fauci had warned in May that failure to do so would lead to “some suffering and death” that could be avoided. How prophetic he was and I hope this time his warning will be taken seriously.
