Captain Marvel Has Some Tasty Pulp Fiction References

Samuel L. Jackson has enjoyed a long career in acting, appearing in no less than a hundred movies a year (give or take). He’s tallied up quite a number of iconic characters from all corners of pop culture — such as Mace Windu and Nick Fury. You can see Jackson reprise the latter this weekend in Captain Marvel, and the movie finds the time to plant some easter eggs for one of Jackson’s most famous films: Pulp Fiction. One fan believes he spotted two references to the iconic film. Check it out:

In capturing a young, mid-’90s era Samuel L. Jackson for “Captain Marvel,” the team at Lola VFX started by watching his classics of that time: “Jurassic Park,” “Die Hard: With a Vengeance,” and most notably, “Pulp Fiction.”

Even though Quentin Tarantino’s film came out in 1994, just a year before when “Captain Marvel” is set, the de-aged Nick Fury is not based on Jackson’s look as Jules Winnfield, and there’s a good reason why.

“We had to throw out ‘Pulp Fiction’ almost immediately just because of the facial hair,” Trent Claus, the visual effects supervisor at Lola told TheWrap. “It blocked so much of the reference that we needed, it wasn’t very useful.”

De-ageing is already a meticulous, time-consuming process, used in several previous Marvel films, but here in Captain Marvel it had to happen over pretty much the entire movie. That required the full arsenal of leading ‘youthening’ effects studio Lola VFX, and a few other companies, to pull off the Nick Fury shots.

Cartoon Brew asked production visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend and Lola visual effects supervisor Trent Claus how the particular Samuel L. Jackson shots were carried out, how exactly people ‘age,’ and what things an artist needs to look for in doing de-ageing work.

Claus says the film that helped their cause the most was the smaller budget thriller “One Eight Seven.” Though Jackson guessed that they would’ve modeled his look from “The Negotiator,” Claus says it was slightly beyond the age they were looking for.
