“The Algerian Health Minister (Abderrahmane Benbouzid) confirmed that a contract was signed … for the acquisition of the coronavirus vaccine with a Russian laboratory,” Belhimer said, summarizing the results of a government session.
The spokesperson indicated that the Pasteur Institute of Algeria “held a series of negotiations with the Russian company that manufactures the Sputnik V vaccine and continue negotiating with other parties“.
On December 20, the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, instructed the Government to decide which of the anticavid vaccines available in the market would be used in the country, to begin immunizing the population already in January 2021.
Minister Benbouzid assured this month that vaccination will be free for all Algerians.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, the total number of COVID-19 positives in Algeria exceeds the 99,000, including 2,751 fatal cases and some 67,000 recoveries.
